Michiel Huijsman
Michiel Huijsman studied art, photography, and graphic design at the Minerva Academy in Groningen. He works as an artist, researcher, and independent curator. He is the initiator of various long-term collaborative art projects in public spaces. He has realized several large light installations and interactive art projects in outdoor spaces, including Wally Public Artificial Light (1996–2002), Vondelpark Oehoe (2001), InnerCityWally (2002), Greenlight (2005), The White Tube (2007), and Gloei! (2013-present).
Together with Renate Zentschnig, Huijsman is co-founder and co-director of Soundtrackcity, an organization dedicated to artistic research into sound. Founded in 2009, Soundtrackcity develops new listening practices and new forms of media art, initiates participatory research projects with local communities, and produces listening guides and artist-made audio walks. He regularly advises cities such as Antwerp and Rotterdam and other government organizations on the subject of sound in public spaces. Together with Marcel Cobussen, he wrote the Sonic Inspiration Guide. For Soundtrackcity, Huijsman produced the Sonic Aggregator, a work of art in which visitors find an ideal listening environment to carefully observe and compare urban auditory spaces.
