Sharon Stewart
Sharon Stewart is an artist and researcher based in Arnhem, The Netherlands, whose practice integrates field recordings into sound design for dance, theatre, and artistic research projects. She facilitates workshops that support participants in cultivating deeper reciprocal relationships with their surroundings and within their communities. At the core of her work are creative listening practices that foster nonverbal connection and openness to dialogue with the land.
Writings include the article Listening to Deep Listening (2012,Journal of Sonic Studies) and Inquiring into the Hack (2020, The Bloomsbury Handbook of Sound Art), regarding new sonic and institutional practices. She was on the editorial team of and contributed to the APRIA issue Time Matters (2021) and co-hosted one episode of the Sounding Places / Listening Places podcast series while creating the Deep Listening® podcast miniseries for ArtEZ Studium Generale. Her most recent publication A Creative, Critical Cartophony of ArtEZ, Arnhem: Situated Listening to Land and Place can be found online and in the book Out of Theory (2025).
As a senior Deep Listening® facilitator for the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer, Sharon carries forward the legacy of Pauline Oliveros, IONE, and Heloise Gold. She is also Associate Editor of the Journal of Sonic Studies, owner of Hands-on Piano studio in Alteveer, and contributed as artistic researcher from 2019–2025 to the Professorship Theory in the Arts, ArtEZ University of the Arts.
